Out and About in Puerto Vallarta
email this pageprint this pageemail usTwila Crawford - PVNN

From International Gourmet Festival dinners and events to theater productions and musical performances to charity fund raisers and health care seminars, there's plenty to see and do while you're Out and About in Puerto Vallarta this week.

Stellar New York theatrical actress, Dana Zeller-Alexis, will star in a one-woman production, Shirley Valentine's Vallarta Adventure, based on a Tony Award-winning comedy, opening at 8 pm on November 15th at the Santa Barbara Theater, 351 Olas Altas in the Puerto Vallarta Romantic Zone. For ticket information, call 223-2048.

Shirley Valentine is a wise-cracking housewife who hits a mid life crisis and escapes suburban life for a vacation in Puerto Vallarta. Promotion of the show notes, "No one thought she had the courage, the nerve, or the lingerie!" Her Shakespeare and Broadway-experienced husband, Mark, directs Dana. The couple co-founded and operate the 78th Street Theatre Lab in New York City.

Dana, through Shirley, reenacts her daughter, her son, her husband and her friend, Jane. With sterling qualifications, Dana has acted off-Broadway and in touring companies. She has taught voice and acting at New York University School of the Arts and other universities. She has studied with the best, including Uta Hagen, who was the original Martha in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? on Broadway. Dana received a Ford scholarship and a Rockefeller Foundation grant for theater studies.

Also, a big night at Santa Barbara will be a one-night musical performance on November 16 by Metamorsa (formerly Los Bambinos) under the excellent guidance of the group by record producer Blaine Selkirk. This will be a celebration of the release of the group's new CD. Call the theater at 223-2048 for details.

Gifts That Give will take place November 23rd and 24th from noon-10 pm at Epoca restaurant on the Malecon extension. Fifteen vendors will be selling everything from wooden keepsake boxes to handmade glass items from wall and hand mirrors to refrigerator magnets. A portion of the proceeds will go towards a fund to help children in this area who need emergency health care. For further information, contact Pamela Thompson of the Puerto Vallarta Healthcare Resources Center at pmt15@hotmail.com.

"My Abdominal Journey," Pamela Thompson's personal journey to having bariatric surgery, losing 80 pounds so far, will be shared at Wise Women in Vallarta on November 14th from 10 am-noon, at the International Friendship Club House, Libertad and Miramar. Her hero doctor, Dr. Armando Joya, will join her. Make reservations with seminar founder Darla Fowler at darla@seminarswithdarla.com. Also, a general information session about HealthCare Resources will be on November 13th at 10 am at Medasist Hospital, south side, fourth floor. Make reservations at pmt15@hotmail.com.

The first monthly breakfast of the season of Becas' scholarship fund raisers drew 75 participants to Vitea restaurant. We were happy to see quite a number of men there for a hearty breakfast. We had a delightful conversation with Ron and Marsha Steckbauer, who are off to travel the world before they settle here next fall. Becas' president, Mariel de Fregosa (221-0789), and her little granddaughter, Constanza, were beautiful together. We all missed a Becas founder, Polly Vicars, who had surgery for a broken wrist. The next Becas Breakfast will be held on November 27th at 9:30 am at Hacienda Restaurant, Lazaro Cardenas 388. Tickets need to be purchased before attending the breakfast.

Bloggers, boarders, messengers, parents and grandparents of today´s youngsters: for heaven's sake, remember you/they are part of worldwide communication these days. "Legal action against bloggers has sky rocketed during the past three years," Robert Cox, president of the Media Bloggers Association, told us at a communication and journalism meeting in Washington, DC.

"Bloggers don´t realize what is on a website goes around the world," Cox explains. Defamation is resulting in lawsuits with judgments of multi-millions of dollars. Many lawsuits currently are in court. Persons personally defamed, along with especially realtors and doctors, have filed suits. California is the leading state where legal action is taken. Some bloggers probably need to purchase protective insurance.

Enjoy the Gourmet Festival, November 8-18, attracting international visitors to Puerto Vallarta to some of our world-class restaurants. Bon Appétit!
