Paradise Marred is Yelapa author Robert Hardin's fifth novel in the David Armstrong courtroom thriller series.

Our thoughts and prayers are with persons living on the Gulf Coast recovering again from a hurricane. Good friends who visit here live in Louisiana.

Thanks to hurricane and political television coverage that I followed, I got some sorting of research papers accomplished. Meaning several garbage bags filled and carried off by trash collectors.

I would like to slug (excuse me, please) some of those pompous, awful television commentators who so personally attack Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, the U.S. Republican vice presidential candidate, if she still is on the ticket. Her politics do not matter to me. But talk about sexism, even hatred and jealousy of women. Just awful demeaning personal things said. Bet these "good ol' boys," some in three-piece suits Washington-style, couldn't hunt a moose, skin it and cook moose burgers, as Palin apparently has done.

Also, do you get tired of hearing how old - and thus supposedly helpless or practically dead - Senator John McCain must be? Again, forget politics. Many persons worldwide are going strong at Senator McCain's age. Running corporations... and how about all of those grandmothers raising children? Look at persons here making fabulous contributions who are much older than Senator McCain.

As I've said before, I can't believe all of the sexism, ageism and racism that seems to still be acceptable. Some of the overt crassness practiced may be because barriers in all of these areas are slowly and surely being broken, especially at the Presidential candidate level now with Senator Barak Obama.

Moving from what seems like the 1950's, the International Friendship Club (IFC), that does so much good here, must be reeling concerning a couple of their former presidents. One was dismissed when "questions" arose. Then Al Chansky, a U.S. citizen, has been arrested concerning an alleged stabbing of Alejandro Cantu, a Mexican citizen. Deron Bond, a U.S. citizen, also was charged. A friend of Chansky wrote me from the U.S., just devastated. The IFC especially is known for its work with Cleft Palate programs.

Heard from a friend who was at the IMSS (Mexican medical insurance) for a medical procedure. The hospital apparently was overcrowded with many injured construction workers.

Thousands in Mexico, including in Puerto Vallarta, marched to express their anger concerning the nation's intensifying crime, and to demand government action. In a statement, Mexican President Felipe Calderon urged all Mexicans to create civil committee to help police in fighting crime. Mayor Javier Bravo received grievances here. Previously, some citizens have been organizing to present information to the Mayor, and to try to keep their neighborhoods safe.

Tango classes are underway with Al and Barbara Garvey. For information, email them at alybarbara(at)yahoo.com.

The new restaurant, Marazul, on the beach, officially opens September 11. Sister restaurants are Si Seρor and The Blue Shrimp. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served. Live music will be available.

During September, Kaiser Maximilian, 380-B Olas Altas, tel: (322) 223-0760, celebrates the national dish of Mexico - Chiles en Nogada.

Paradise Marred is Robert Hardin's fifth novel in the David Armstrong courtroom series. The Yelapa author previously has been nominated for an Agatha Award for best classic mystery. Hardin, who has been an attorney, has his books available at Amazon.com, at Barnes & Noble bookstores, and here at A Page in the Sun on Olas Altas.

Thank you to so many of you who ask about Blake, my 8-year-old grandson, who has a rare bone disease of the hip. He only needs to sleep in braces now, with walking and physical activity curtailed yet. He'll be fine one day, and is our hero because he is such a trooper.

Allyna Vineberg has left the Vallarta Tribune as editor. I admire her tremendously. She built the Tribune to be the most sought-after publication to read to keep up with Puerto Vallarta news. Whatever you do next, Allyna, keep giving 'em hell! We will miss you.
