Out and About in Puerto Vallarta
email this pageprint this pageemail usTwila Crawford - PVNN

If you want to know what's going on here in Vallarta and around the world this summer, be sure to read this week's edition of Out and About in Puerto Vallarta. Twila will keep you up to date on all of the latest news and local happenings.

Hooray for the Tribune for printing letters with criticisms. It isn't easy when a new editor takes over, and the newspaper also is redesigned - it takes awhile for a feeling of comfort to set in again. And trying to do it when English is a second language for some certainly isn't easy.

Of course, changes have been a shock for some Tribune readers. Also, my friend's column under the name of Anna Reisman undoubtedly will appear elsewhere eventually. Good to see some new names writing for the Tribune as well as familiar names and friends.

Our thoughts and prayers, again, are with persons recovering from the latest hurricane. My Louisiana friends have evacuated twice. They have fared well but some of their neighbors had severe damage.

Puerto Vallarta this year is joining the international effort to make peace a priority. A musical event by Arcano on Sunday, September 21st at 6:30 pm will be at the Westin Hotel and Spa at the Marina Vallarta. Brother Vick on keyboards and sister Erika on violin will present a program of music from different countries and styles. A ticket costs $200 pesos, and the proceeds will go to Becas Vallarta, A.C., a scholarship program for Puerto Vallarta area students.

Cafe Bohemio, Rodolfo Gomez 127, will reopen by October 15th, according to owners Sol Rose and Christopher May. Sol is performing now in Las Vegas. He has put together a couple of new shows for this next theater season here.

Charlotte and Carol of Xocodiva Artisan Chocolates, Rodolfo Gomez 111, will have fudge available this fall. We'll enjoy chocolate, milk, maple and white fudge. I'll be first in line!

A number of small real estate offices are gone from the scene, and well-publicized Venegas has closed down.

Banana Cantina, Amapas 147 and Pulpito, opens October 16th for its fourth season. Owner Debbie threw a pre-opening party for some of her friends, sharing delicious food and spiffy new decor. Paco Ojeda offered a lovely toast to Debbie. It was a delightful evening.

A group of us gathered at Back Alley, Madero 225, for lunch and conversation during the rainy season. Pamela Thompson organized it. Talking together at our table were Lisa York, Judy Kerwin, Ginger Carpenter, Kathy Paresotto and Donna Lynn Davies. Back Alley is for sale. If you are interested, Donna can help you. More dates to put on your calendar. A concert by the Vallarta Chamber Orchestra for the 12th anniversary of Los Mangos Library is November 28th. The SPCA de Vallarta will have a fundraiser with an auction and dinner on November 29th at Puerta del Cielo, Miramar 363. Donations for the event are $1000 pesos per person. Tickets are available at Hacienda San Angel, Miramar 336, tel: 222-2692. The Vallarta Chamber Orchestra has its two concerts for the season scheduled for December 14th, including a choir, and then its spring concert on March 15th.

Some of us can't keep up with the shootings here anymore. Most probably are drug related. Five police officers were reported killed recently in a shootout that included grenades in the Marina Vallarta area. Others were injured. A store was damaged. Police now post themselves outside San Javier and Cornerstone hospitals.

The Marina area has experienced other shootings in recent months. While I was working out the other day, persons came running into the place saying that there was a shootout south of town. A source close to the police says Vallarta supposedly hasn't seen anything yet, after a summer of considerable violence, probably tied to drugs. Word around is that drug lords from Mazatlan are fighting to take over in Vallarta.

Economic factors also apparently contribute to crime here. Persons talk about crime in their neighborhoods, or also of their personal experiences. Again, keep well-informed and stay aware. Enjoy life here otherwise.

Heard from television how some families in Hurricane Ike subjected their children to staying with them, terrified and vomiting, as described in television interviews. Sounds like child cruelty to me. And I hope those who stayed behind after being told to evacuate, who cost the government (U.S. taxpayers) in rescue efforts, are fined or receive invoices for their lack of judgment. What do you think?

Moving here from Washington, D.C., remembering 9/11 well when the Pentagon was hit, the unveiling of the memorial this year was moving and brought back many memories. The benches in the park carry the 184 victims' individual names.
