Out and About in Puerto Vallarta
email this pageprint this pageemail usTwila Crawford - PVNN

I came off of the airplane at the airport here in a wheelchair. I didn't need it physically. Apparently luggage carts aren't used at the deboarding site. So they put me in a wheelchair, with my two heavy onboard bags. A helpful young airport employee helped me.

The first thing I had on my return schedule was to go to Immigration. My visa deadline was while I was on my trip. So I spent one day before the trip and two days afterwards at Immigration. It takes longer than before, along with more paperwork. So bring a book or your personal work. One man fainted. And work continued while he was on the floor. Ambulance personnel did check him out.

Returning to the downtown area, we viewed more and more what I call mini-high rises. Puerto Vallarta truly looks like a medium-size city now. Quaintness of only a few years ago is past.

Bach, Beethoven and Jazz will be featured at the Vallarta Chamber Orchestra's Spring Concert at 8 pm on Sunday, March 15 at the American School in the Vallarta Marina area. Conductor is Nick Salmans who has brought the orchestra a long way in two years of his involvement.

Don't miss artist Evelyn Boren's watercolors and oils at Galerie des Artistes, Leona Vicario 248. She was one of the first artists to have an exhibition in one of the first galleries in town.

The Indigenous Festival is March 1-15 at Plaza Caracol. Please help with attending some of the events.

The Becas Ball at the Westin Hotel on March 5th will remember Vallarta's Peter Gray. For more information, click HERE.

The next bi-weekly open studio evening of artist Pat Henry will be March 6 from 6-9:30 pm at Jacarandas 183. The artist is painting oil and acrylic abstracts that explore spatial relationships through color, texture and movement.

A new series of Tango classes for beginners is underway with Al and Barbara Garvey at the J&B Dancing Club, F.M. Ascensio 2043. For information, call (322) 222-8895.

A weekend-long series of events are planned March 7-9 in Vallarta at the Democrats Abroad general meeting. For further information, call Susan Wichterman at 044-322-303-5181.

Gypsy Rumba and Flamenco guitar are featured at 9 pm Sunday, March 8, at the upstairs of Ritmos Beach Cafe, Malecon 177, on the southside.

Professional actress and acting teacher Liv Boughn is conducting acting classes at Santa Barbara Theater. For further information, click HERE or email pvactress(at)hotmail.com.

With the flower show at Vallarta Botanical Gardens south of town ending, exciting events continue during March. The Mexican Chocolates, Coffee and Vanilla Festival is Tuesday-Sunday, March 10-15, from 10 am-6 pm. Then the Food and Nectar of the Gods is Saturday, March 14, from 6-9:30 pm. Enjoy wine and chocolates with Xocodiva Artisan Chocolates and La Bodega de Nina Fine Wines. A Mexican buffet is included for $550 pesos. Free transportation is provided. For further information, tel: (322) 223-6182.

The paintings of artist and poet Marcia Wolf looked beautiful at blu salon on Basilio Badillo. Her book of poetry is on sale at various galleries.

Denver actress Alex Ryer was a big hit again with her Edith Piaf show at Santa Barbara Theater. Look forward to seeing her next season.

Wise Wo-men programs have been successful and popular this season. Thank you to founder Darla Fowler.

Four Vallarta boys, ages 11-13, displayed their works of art at Espacio de Angeles, Lazaro Cardenas 452. These young artists, Alessandro Luthi, Ernesto Gispert, Milan Mansfield and Sebastian Loza, have been painting for the past three years in the Taller of Maestro Oscar Montiel. The youth have created a scholarship fund in hopes that another young artist at R.I.S.E. (Refugio) will have opportunity as an artist. Maestro Montiel will match proceeds from the young painters' creations. For more information, click HERE or call (322) 223-9832.

Vallarta food writer and restaurant reviewer Gary R. Beck has released his 2009 restaurant guide, Beck's Best. It can be purchased online at CafePress.com and at any number of stores locally.

Gary also coordinates several computer boards. He handled thoughtfully discussions about the murder at La Palapa condos. As we always stress, he reminded locals and tourists to be informed about safety and to be aware at all times.

As a further reality, recently a fugitive from the U.S., Kirk Swaggerty, Genoa, IL, was arrested in La Penita, Nayarit. He was on a Most Wanted list and had been on the run for five years, using another name. Swaggerty is awaiting trial on murder and home invasion charges.

The International Friendship Club (IFC) has many interesting programs this season from lectures, social events to tours. Movie night is on Tuesday at 7 pm at the club, Libertad and Miramar. The IFC gallery has exhibition of art from 9 am-1 pm. Twenty percent of purchase goes to IFC. A reminder that the general meeting is at 7:15 pm on March 10. For further information, call (322) 222-5466.

With remembering Sally Conley, who was a member of the Los Mangos Public Library Board, plans are for "Sally's Corner" at the library. This project will refurbish and enhance offerings of the children´s library there. A volunteer tutor program also will assist children who use the library

A fundraiser for "Sally's Corner" is Saturday, April 4, 5:30-10:30 pm at Villa Mandarinas, Mismaloya. Hosts are Gabriela Garcia and Alberto al Varez. Transportation will be provided for a cocktail buffet and silent auction.
