The Canto Del Sol Resort and Tennis Club in Puerto Vallarta was selected to be the host of an international conference for coaches and trainers of tennis players and tennis clubs, in order to provide a comprehensive program to participants during the week of September 20th - 24th. The conference will begin this Monday and conclude Friday.

For tennis players, this will not include a tennis tournament, but for tennis players that wish to attend and learn some of the most cutting edge developments in tennis just might want to attend.

The Mexican Tennis Federation (FMT) put together the conference and invited coaches from the International Tennis Federation (ITF) who is the governing body of tennis in the United States and around the world, the Central American Tennis Federation and the Caribbean Tennis Federation.

The Mexican Tennis Federation has been restructuring tennis on both the professional and amateur levels in Mexico and working on new programs, one of which is the National Coaches Training Program.

The Federation believes that in order to better develop organized tennis and have better players, the training of the coaches that teach tennis is indispensable. The program was designed for this reason and its objective is to evaluate tennis coaches and instructors and to provide them with the most current international information. Manuals have also been designed that will allow tennis to be taught nationwide.

Taking the lead for the conference is Lic. Gaston Villegas Serralta, the President of the Mexican Tennis Federation. Serralta along with those that have worked with him to develop the program brought in tennis officials from around the world to present workshops in many areas. Many of the presentations will be in English and translated into Spanish.

Some of the more interesting workshops that were pointed out to me by Martin Parra, the Director of Tennis at the Canto Del Sol will be given by Australia's Machar Reid, who will discuss the biomechanics of the serve and will be presented at 9:30 AM Monday morning. On Tuesday at 4:15 PM Antoni Girod of France is the Director of Psychology of the French Tennis Federation. Thursday at 9:30 AM will have Canada's Wayne Elderton giving a presentation on how to develop a tennis academy and at 12:15 PM also on Thursday, Dave Miley of the ITF will present on the ITF development of tennis worldwide.

There are many more workshops and presenters from different countries and each day's activities will begin at 8:15 AM and conclude at 6:00 PM each day. On the opening day of the conference a dinner will be served for program participants at 8:00 PM and a concluding dinner will be held Friday at the close of the conference.

The conference, presentations and lectures will be held on the hard courts at the tennis club and the public is invited to attend. For more information, call the Canto Del Sol Tennis Club locally at 226-0123, ext. 4187.
