November 04, 2020

The 2020-2021 shopping season is getting started. Most of the markets are opening during the first week of November with all the safety measures in place to prevent the possible spread of Covid-19.
Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico - Shopping will be quite the experience from November through April, thanks to the traditional markets in the coastal towns of the Riviera Nayarit, where locals offer the best organic and artisanal products of the season.

Also known as "Farmers Markets," they will follow the strict health protocols required by the new normal and are ready to receive the first wave of winter tourists from the United States and Canada.

These Farmers Markets are a blend of the very Mexican tianguis markets and their North American counterparts and are a great option for buying organic food and meeting regional producers and artisans. They're also a fun way to spend a Saturday or Sunday morning or an afternoon in the company of family and friends.

It's important to note that, in order to reopen the markets, every protective measure was put in place so visitors can shop safely. Not all of them are re-opening, however, some have decided to wait for next season once conditions have improved.

Below please find a list of those that have already confirmed an opening date:

La Cruz Market

This artisanal market - a pioneer in the region - reopened for its 11th season on November 1st with a new location: next to the amphitheater inside the Marina Riviera Nayarit. Also known as the "Tianguis Huanacaxtle," it's an excellent spot to spend some time between 9 am and 2 pm.

Visitors will find an ample variety of stands to browse through with all sorts of handmade products, organic fruits and vegetables, cheese, sausages, traditional clothing and more.

Open on Sundays | Hours: 9 am to 2 pm | Season: Winter – November to April | Location: Marina Riviera Nayarit, La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Nayarit

Tianguis Lo de Marcos

The organizers of the Tianguis Lo de Marcos have chosen to suspend all their activities this season due to the health risks posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. "The Sars-Covid-19 virus has been devastating for tourism and artists throughout Mexico. Our hearts are saddened by the thought that our beloved artisans - many of whom have been with us since the first year we opened the Tianguis (7 years ago) - will not have a place to go this year. We hope to meet again for the 2021-2022 season," said the organizers.

The opening dates for the traditional markets in San Pancho, La Peñita de Jaltemba, Rincón de Guayabitos, and Chacala are also still pending.
