Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico - During the 2019 Despertares Impulsa, an annual event that celebrates art and culture in Guadalajara, Fin DAC, an artist from Ireland created something very special - a 150 foot tall mural depicting one of the most notable female painters of all time - Frida Kahlo.

Painted over the course of 11 days in July, 'Magdalena' is the Irish artist's biggest wall to date. The mural pays tribute to Frida, a woman of strength and endurance with a fashion sense all of her own. "She embodies everything I strive for in my own portraiture, so it was a massive, massive, honor to be asked to paint her in her homeland," Fin DAC said.

"Even if the surrealist hadn't been such a big influence on me in my youth, just to be able to do an official and approved portrait of one of the art icons of any century is huge. The fact that this is the biggest depiction of her anywhere in the world, and that I've been allowed to depict her in a way that she's never been seen before, is just the icing on the cake," he added.

"It was important to me to have both obvious and not so obvious elements relating to the subject matter even down to the naming of the piece. Frida has been painted so many times, and in so many ways through the years, I just wanted this mural to hopefully stand out as something a little different."

'Magdalena' can be found on Chapultepec Avenue and, at 150 ft tall, it's almost impossible to miss.

The mural was painted as part of the annual Despertares Impulsa event that takes place in Guadalajara, Jalisco. The brand is the brainchild of the renowned Mexican ballet dancer Isaac Hernandez and includes a whole host of cultural events including seminars, dance, performance and music.
