Whether you're looking for a beach vacation or a place to settle down for a while, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico has become one of the world's most recognized gay travel destinations. Offering the perfect combination of sun, sand, culture and a huge LGBT community, Puerto Vallarta has it all for the LGBTQ traveler: crisp air, sunny weather, modern amenities and Mexican charm.

But Puerto Vallarta is more than just a party-driven gay getaway. Local businesses and the resident LGBT community have put a lot of effort into making PV a great place to work and live, which is why, after visiting for the first time, many gay travelers come back again, and eventually choose to live here.

Here is the first of a two part definite gay guide to the puerto vallarta gay scene found in Puerto Vallarta by GAYPV Magazine. 

First the local people of Puerto Vallarta are very welcoming to the LGBT community. The local community doesn’t care about your sexual orientation. That is reflected by their warmth and friendly acceptance for the gay community. So much that the city is often called " the friendliest city in the world." Generally speaking Puerto Vallarta’s gay travel industry is very well connected to other parts of the world, especially the US and Canada. Also the recent increase of local Mexican airlines Aeromexico, Interjet, Volaris, Vivaaerobus, and TAR have easily connected Puerto Vallarta with cities like Guadalajara and Mexico City with large gay populations. The unique natural beauty of the Banderas Bay provides some of the most amazing features loved by the gay traveler: amazing Pacific coast sunsets, towering Sierra Madre mountians, lush tropical jungles, and the warm sunny "gay beach" for day time cruising all year long. 

Puerto Vallarta has a true Gay Zone. The “Zona Romantica” is a true gayborhood where all the gay bars, clubs, businesses, restaurants, and gay hotels are within a safe walking distance of each other. With some rare exceptions, you never have to leave for anything. Evidence of the gayborhood and its popularity is one of the reasons for all the recent condo construction seen in the Romantic Zone.  The gay scene during the day in Puerto Vallarta is centered on the gay beach stretching from the world famous Blue Chairs Gay Hotel to Mantamar Beach Club . This day cruising scene is the world famous local gathering spot for socializing, cruising and sunbathing normally busiest from 2pm until sunset.

At night, the gay scene shifts to the many bars and clubs along Olas Altas and Lazaro Cardenas streets. Much can be said about the incredible, endless gay night scene.  The city has the most well developed gay nightlife in Mexico! The first gay bar opened more than 20 years ago and today more than 25 gay bars and clubs are thriving *some open until 6 am, each unique and all conveniently located in the Zone. 

Because of the large amount of gay bars found in PV, gay events are plentiful during the entire year and in fact widely known throughout the entire world. The gay community calls these large events circuit parties. Visiting Puerto Vallarta during a major gay festival or event is not only a great way for first time visitors to see the city, but it also the best way to discover the local gay community which could lead to a full or part time resident.
