Nonstop Flights to Mexico City Will Resume
email this pageprint this pageemail usShannon McMahon - Union-Tribune

Ending a four-year hiatus, AeroMexico said yesterday that it will resume nonstop service from San Diego to Mexico City beginning July 7.

"Right now, there is enough demand for a direct flight from San Diego," said Juan M. Garcia, marketing director for the U.S. division of AeroMexico. "We're getting back to the levels we had in 2001."

Only four airlines offer international service from Lindbergh Field. WestJet Airlines began seasonal, nonstop service to Calgary, British Columbia, Canada, last week. Alaska Airlines and America West offer nonstop service to Vancouver, British Columbia, as well as to Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta in Mexico. AeroMexico offers service to Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Loreto.

San Diego has lagged behind Tijuana and Los Angeles in terms of direct service to Mexico City. In 2000, AeroMexico and Continental Airlines grounded their nonstop flights to Mexico City, said Diana Lucero, a spokeswoman for San Diego International Airport. The service by both airlines had started in 1997. AeroMexico briefly offered service again in December 2001, Lucero said.

Depending on the response to the San Diego-Mexico City flight, AeroMexico said it might offer more direct flights to Mexico City. The AeroMexico flights will depart twice weekly, on Thursdays and Sundays. Round-trip tickets start at $384.

"We are waiting to see how these flights do to determine if we want to grow more in the market," Garcia said.

Previously, travelers out of San Diego who wanted a direct flight to Mexico City first went to Tijuana's Abelardo L. Rodriguez International Airport. Lower airport fees in Mexico allow for tickets to be priced lower, Garcia said. Nonstop service from Tijuana to Mexico City starts at $360 round-trip.

Lucero said Lindbergh Field is in talks with AeroMexico about offering more nonstop flights to Mexico City.

"Mexico City is one of our largest international markets from San Diego and one of the largest markets that didn't have a direct flight," Lucero said. Of the new service, she said, "We have consistently heard that Mexico City is in demand for business from this region, so this is good news."
