Summer - A Great Time to Buy Art in Vallarta
email this pageprint this pageemail usDenise Derameé - PVNN

If you're planning on being in town this month, mark your calendar for Friday, August 12 at 9 pm for a great art auction at the Hotel Premiere, near El Centro.
There is really no mystery why Puerto Vallarta has become a major international art center. Though Puerto Vallarta's art scene is most publicized during the November to April tourist season, the summer months are also a great time to visit art shows, galleries and museums.

Many of the art galleries in Puerto Vallarta are open year-round, so while walking around Vallarta in the summertime, be sure to stop in at any gallery for special summer prices. The local art community is gearing up for the upcoming Art Walk season, which begins at the end of October, so many art galleries are offering discounts on their featured artists' existing art works to make room for the new art that will be showcased in the upcoming season.

Dimitar Krustev, Steven King, Claudia Nery, Dionicio Becerra, Javier Zaragoza and others have authorized Galeria Vallarta owner Barbara Peters to offer special prices on their artwork, which just goes to show that the summer months are a great time to buy original art in Puerto Vallarta.

In addition, many hotels and restaurants here mount temporary art exhibits or feature paintings and sculptures in their décor on a permanent basis. This year-round focus on art has contributed both to Puerto Vallarta being considered a world class art center, as well as being a "work of art" in it's own right.

In other art news, the Peter Gray Art Museum at the Centro Universitario de la Costa, inaugurated this past April to house the University's permanent art collection, recently received an important donation from local artist Tellosa. The five meter wide mobile gives a great splash of color to the cupola at the entrance to the museum. The museum is closed until the end of August, but please visit it when it has reopened.

If you're planning on being in town this month, mark your calendar for Friday, August 12 at 9 pm for a great art auction at the Hotel Premiere, across the street from the Hotel Buenaventura near El Centro. The art auction will benefit the artistic and athletic exchange programs of our Puerto Vallarta / Highland Park, Illinois Sister Cities committee, and will be the highlight of the summer art season, so be sure to attend.

The participation of local galleries and a good number of independent artists guarantees a variety of techniques, styles and themes for all tastes and budgets. Art galleries such as Arte Latinoamericano, Galeria Uno, Galeria Vallarta, Galeria des Artistes, Galeria Omar Alonso, and Galeria Corsica are participating with some great original art works - at well below their actual value.

You will have a chance to bid on paintings by Marta Gilbert, Sergio Martinez, Marenal, José Marca, Roberto Bermejo, Javier Zaragoza, Steven King, Dimitar Krustev, Cathy Von Rohr, Martina Goldberg, Ada Colorina, Agustin Castro Lopez, Santiago Carbonell, Bill White, Edgar Martinez and others, as well as a signed lithograph by the famous José Luis Cuevas. To receive your invitation to the art auction at the Hotel Premiere please call Ruben Cham at 322-293-4143.
