Gibson Begins Auditions in Cancun Wire services
Cancun - Actor and director Mel Gibson on Wednesday here began auditions to select the main actors and extras who will appear in his next film, a tale to be told in a Mayan language about native people's view of Spanish invasion and conquest.
"Apocalypto" will be shot in the rural Mayan areas of the southeastern Yucatan Peninsula and in the eastern coastal state of Veracruz.
More than 1,200 people signed up for the auditions. Among the requirements for appearing in the film are "having Mayan Indian features and speaking the Mayan language," said Quintana Roo state Tourism Secretary Gabriela Rodríguez Gálvez.
The controversial director of "The Passion of the Christ" and winner of an Oscar for "Braveheart," chose a littleknown Mayan dialect as the language in which to shoot the film, which is set five centuries ago in Central America.
Among the cast of "Apocalypto," which will begin filming in October, will be many local Indians with no experience acting in movies.
The historical drama in which Gibson will not appear as an actor is scheduled to hit the theaters next summer.
Disney will undertake the U.S. distribution of the film, which is being completely financed by Gibson's Icon production company, just as was "The Passion of the Christ."
"I hope that it will open more doors," he said. |
