Book by Cuban Five Member Released in Havana

A book entitled "Inseparable Poems" by Antonio Guerrero, one of the "Cuban Five," was launched on Monday in Havana with the presence of the president of the Cuban Parliament, Ricardo Alarcon.

Dedicated to his four comrades incarcerated in the US, Guerrero's book of poems is a denunciation and a warning, said editor Basilia Papastamatiu.

In the book's prologue, Papastamatiu pointed out that the author stated that his brothers in the fight against terrorism - Rene Gonzalez, Ramon Labanino, Fernando Gonzalez and Gerardo Hernandez - were the essence and motivation for his fifth book of poems, published seven years after the five men's unjust arrest in Miami.

What is most admirable about the book, said Papastamatiu, is Tony's desire to promote the best ideals, actions and the noblest of sentiments.

The renowned intellectual pointed out that for her "Inseparable" is a unique experience in an attempt to understand how the poet conceived and wrote poems with such vitality, faith and wisdom while finding himself in the harshest conditions.

For Antonio Guerrero, she pointed out, what is impressive is the fact that despite having lost his freedom, he has unleashed an enormous creative passion.

The book, published by the Letras Cubanas publishing house, includes an epilogue by Roberto Gonzalez, the brother of prisoner Rene Gonzalez, and also included excerpts of other books by the author published in Cuba.

Attending the ceremony were relatives of the Cuban Five and National Literature Prize winners, Jesus Orta Ruiz, Miguel Barnet, Pablo Armando Fernandez, Cintio Vitier and Fina Garcia Marruz.

Cuban "Trova" singers were also on hand to participate in an artistic moment when Guerrero's poems were set to music.

The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta recently annulled the Cuban Five's sentences and ordered a new trial. The men had previously been convicted in a biased trial in Miami for having infiltrated right wing Cuban-American terrorists groups plotting against the island and its people.
