October Kicks Off the Art Season in Puerto Vallarta
email this pageprint this pageemail usDenise Derameé - PVNN

"Las Catrinas" [small paper mâché figures depicting skeletons enjoying daily life, courting one another, or mocking our mortal foibles] and many other forms of Day of the Dead art abound in Puerto Vallarta art galleries during October and November, so be sure and visit your favorite gallery to check out their collections.
Galeria Dante kicked off the 2005/2006 Puerto Vallarta art season early this year by hosting a cocktail reception on September 28th that featured erotic art by a number of area artists. For those who missed the event, an erotic art exhibition will be on display at City Hall through October 2nd, as part of the "Look at Erotica by Mexican Artists" Tour de Art organized by the Lifestyle Group, who plan erotic art shows in various parts of the world.

In other Puerto Vallarta art news, last month's Municipal Photo Contest was a big success. Out of the fifty-six photographs submitted by sixteen local photographers, the series of photos entitled EMP by Pedro Nuño and the MZ31 group of photographs submitted by Sergio Martinez were awarded first prize in the contest's two categories.

The avant-garde series "She" by Paola Pacheco and Ruth Alvarez's "A tiny bit of a portion of death" were also presented with special awards for photographic creativity and talent. These photographic art works will remain on exhibition at Los Mangos Public Library's Bernice Starr Hall through October 7th. Be sure to stop by the library, located at 1001 Francisco Villa Avenue, to take advantage of this opportunity to admire the works of our talented local artists.

Claudia Nery, one of Jalisco's top artists, has been invited to exhibit her artwork in an exhibition at the Four Seasons Hotel Punta de Mita from October 13th to Nov 10th. Her beautiful paintings will be on display for resort guests only, but this month you can get a sneak peek at some of her new works at Galeria Vallarta, where she will be the featured artist at this popular downtown art gallery during the Old Town Art Walk scheduled for February 1st.

In the meantime, all of the Central Vallarta art galleries are busy getting ready for the season's first Old Town Art Walk and cocktail reception, which will be held on October 26th from 6-10 pm. Seventeen galleries will participate this year, including Galeria Uno, Galeria Arte Latinoamericano, Galeria Pacifico, Corsica Galeria, Leonardo Galeria, Galeria Vallarta, Galeria Corona, Beatriz Narváez, Galeria LaNana, Galeria des Artistes, Galeria Omar Alonso, Galeria 8 y mas, Galeria Arte Popular Mexicana, Galeria de Ollas, Galeria Nelly, Galeria Portus, and Sergio Bustamante.

With Halloween just around the corner, it's important to mention the Day of the Dead. In Mexico, it is believed that the spirits of the dead visit their families on October 31st and leave on November 2nd. In celebration, Mexican families make altars and place ofrendas (offerings) of food such as Pan de Muertos, sweet bread baked in shapes of skulls and figures, sugar skeletons and other treats on the altars they custom-designed for their dearly departed.

Here in Vallarta, City Hall will celebrate the occasion by hosting its annual altar-building contest and exhibition, as will the Cultural Center on Rio Cuale Island. In addition, several local art galleries will be taking advantage of the upcoming Dia de Los Muertos celebrations, kicking off their 2005/2006 art season by unveiling their own creative altars and displaying Day of the Dead art in all forms during this year's first Old Town Art Walk on October 26th.

The Day of the Dead is a time to remember those who have gone before us, thank them for enriching our lives, and contemplate our own mortality, both with reverence and with humor.
