| Jose Emilio Pacheco | Mexican writer Jose Emilio Pacheco on Monday won the Federico Garcia Lorca International Poetry Award in Spain.
The jury said the value of the poetical work of Pacheco is a great contribution to the Hispanic literature.
Pacheco, born in Mexico City in 1939, has become a "top literary character" in America and Spain, said senior cultural official Juan Garcia Montero.
The Mexican writer will receive 50,000 euros (60,000 dollars) and a sculpture by famous Spanish artist, Miguel Moreno.
Among Pacheco's works are "The Castle in the Needle" (El Castillo en la Aguja) published in 1962, "I stare at the ground " (Miro la Tierra) in 1986, "Zoology Album" (Album de Zoologia) in 1991 and "The Roaming Sand" (La Arena Errante) in 1999.
The award is named after Federico Garcia Lorca, a poet and martyr of the Spanish Republican era. In 1936, he was shot by supporters of Gen. Francisco Franco's regime after being forced to dig his own grave. |
