Cuban Five at Guadalajara Book Fair Prensa Latina
Guadalajara - The mother of one of the five Cuban anti-terrorism fighters held in US prisons, Mirtha Rodriguez, appealed Tuesday to world solidarity to work to release her son and his four comrades.
Rodriguez presented two books of poems by her son, Antonio Guerrero, in the 19th International Book Fair happening in this Mexican city of Guadalajara as of November 26.
What they were doing in the US was gathering information on Miami-based terrorist groups operating against Cuba, but in the manipulated trial in Miami, they were given very harsh sentences, ranging from life to 15 years in prison.
Despite an Atlanta Appellate Court ruling by three justices in August that reversed their convictions, Antonio, Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labanino and Rene Gonzalez, also known as The Five, remained in US prisons.
The US has appealed this ruling and the Five must now re-appeal before the full 12-justice Appeals Court in February.
Antonio´s mother said, "I'm afraid something may happen to my Tony," but then expressed her faith in their eventual release and told people attending the fair: "even faith has to be helped, and you can do it."
She read excerpts from both of his books, which are very moving in all their strength and emotion.
Meanwhile, Mexican intellectual Mario Najera, chair of the Guadalajara University Jose Marti department, presented the book by attorney Rodolfo Davalos: "Cinco heroes, un juicio silenciado en Estados Unidos" (Five Heroes, a Trial Silenced in the US), which is an analysis of the trial procedures used against them.
The plight of the Cuban prisoners violates international and US laws, declared Najera. |
