First Call For The Becas Ball Peter Gray - PVNN
| The annual Becas Ball fundraiser is a benefit dinner, dance and raffle to raise scholarship funds for Puerto Vallarta's students in need. |
| This year's affair will be held on Saturday, March 4th from 7 pm-12:30 am at the Westin Regina Resort and Spa in Marina Vallarta. | Within the laid-back lifestyle we all came to Puerto Vallarta to enjoy, the Becas Ball every year provides the closest thing Puerto Vallarta has to a formal "High Society" event.
Sure, there seem to be more and more charity events every year, but the Becas Ball is still the one that qualifies as the particularly special and elegant event. Maybe it's because the Becas Vallarta scholarship fund is, by local standards, a venerable institution.
It dates back to 1961, when Puerto Vallarta was still a very simple "pueblito" with a bare handful of expats. Year after year, as the town grew and the needs of the community escalated, Becas Vallarta volunteers have striven to keep the annual Becas Ball in the forefront of everyone's social calendar.
As the main source of funding for providing hundreds of scholarships for really smart but impoverished kids, it is enormously important that the Becas Ball maintain its competitive edge.
To achieve this requires attention to details that other functions might skip. The elegant floral center-pieces for the tables, for instance, are created specially for the event by expert designers.
Appropriate live music is provided during the free cocktail hour and while guests check out the largest selection of silent auction items. And, incidentally, this year you can short-circuit the bidding process by offering to pay a pre-set amount. This innovation was attempted not too successfully last year, but will work well this year with the help of a team of Becado youngsters who will handle the process for you.
Of course, choosing the location is very important. The Westin Regina and Spa provides exactly the right atmosphere of cool elegance that suits the occasion. Finalizing the most appropriate menu is the subject of careful choosing and testing.
There will be a new dance band performing this year since some guests found last year's band a bit too enamored of their own amplifiers.
When all is said and done, in the end the success of the evening always depends on the guests for whom all has been carefully prepared. So, ladies, please bring out your "best" jewelry and your favorite evening gown: Gentlemen, please make a serious attempt to at least look civilized if you can't manage elegant. Whatever you decide will doubtless be fine on the night!
The venue is the Westin Regina Resort and Spa in Marina Vallarta. The date is Saturday, March 4th. Doors open at 7 pm, Cocktail Hour from 7:30-8:30 pm, Cash Bar from 8:30-12:30 am.
