Manos de Amor por Bahía

Bucerias, Nayarit - For the past several years, a group of dedicated Bucerias women have been hard at work on a plan to help children in the Bahía de Banderas community. In April of 2004, they formed Manos de Amor por Bahía, a non-profit organization committed to building an orphanage/shelter for the children of the Bahía de Banderas.

Though the group already has the land in Bucerias and plans to begin construction this spring, a project of this scope takes plenty of money - and these women have been very inventive in their fund raising. On Friday, January 13th, a cocktail party/fund raiser was held to further their efforts.

Peter and Carole D'Addio's lovely new home and art gallery (D'Addio and D'Addio), located at Làzaro Càrdenas 108 in Bucerias, provided the perfect setting for this very special event. Only 75 tickets were printed, and these were sold out several days in advance.

The guests enjoyed appetizers from restaurants in Bucerias, such as Roots, Ixta and La Lomita, as well as those prepared by various supporters of the orphanage cause. Wine and beer were also served, and music was provided by popular local musician, Rigoberto, playing classical guitar.

The organizers of this event - Veronica Gòmez, Valiene Heckart, Angelica Hernandez, Concepciòn Lopez, Anne Milling and Dorothy Simpson - did an excellent job of providing a special evening for everyone. Peter and Carole also generously donated 20% of the proceeds of sales of art work (there were several) to the orphanage project. Net proceeds from the event were approximately $20,000 pesos.

Next on the fund-raising schedule is the Second Annual "Rhythm and Ribs" event, which will take place in the Bucerias plaza on February 26th. Last year's event was a huge success and organizers promise it will be even better this year!

Manos de Amor continues to hold bazaars to sell donated items at reasonable prices at the Bucerias tianguis on Sunday mornings. The next bazaar will be on Sunday, Jan. 22nd. If you have items to donate such as clothing, household items, furniture, etc., call Valiene at 329-298-1013 or email her at asavaliene@pvr.cybercable.net.mx

With the amount of energy these women have, there is no doubt that they will achieve their goal of a children's shelter for the Bahía de Banderas!
