In April, a group of volunteers from the Rotary Club of Truckee and the Rotary Club of Tahoe City will venture down to Las Varas, Mexico, a town about 60 miles north of Puerto Vallarta, to construct a vision center at a privately run medical and educational clinic.

The Tahoe City club is sponsoring the $30,000 project, which is benefiting Condivencia Compensina clinic, the same center that was previously refurbished by the Tahoe City club with an X-ray room, a new lab, an educational kitchen and a teaching facility.

"The Lions Club of Las Varas has determined that there are close to 400 cases of glaucoma and cataracts in this town of 13,000, and citizens are unable to afford treatment," said Tahoe City Rotarian Ralph Owens, who is leading the project.

The clinic will be equipped for eye surgery, said Owens, and will also receive equipment for a scrub room and recovery room.
