Christy and her work
Christy Ann Beguesse describes herself as "broken arted" and she loves it that way!

Tucked away on Lazaro Cardenas in Bucerias, Christy has a mosaic art studio and teaches workshops for people wanting to make their own artwork.

Christy began her artistic adventure with a prayer. She was working for Nestle in Tijuana and living near the beach. She loved the beach and was sad to have to leave the beauty each morning when she went to work.

Every day, Christy went to church. She prayed for God to give her a sign for something creative she could do and sell that would allow her to live at the beach. One day, she noticed the mosaic in the alcove of the church and thought, "I can do that!"

To get started, Christy bought a book about mosaics and decorated a flowerpot. Her friends loved her work and she began selling mosaic work from her home. Six months later, Christy opened a gallery in Rosarita, Baja California.

The next year, the Nevada Catholic Archdioceses commissioned Christy to create a mosaic Virgin of Guadalupe. It is now in the St. John's Catholic Church in Laughlin, Nevada.

Christy lived and worked in Rosarita for seven years before recently relocating to Bucerias, Nayarit. She continues to do custom mosaic work, but has added a new twist to her business.

Several days a week, Christy conducts mosaic tile workshops at her studio. Everyone from small kids to senior citizens, artists to accountants can participate. "No past experience is needed," says Christy, "Just come to the workshop prepared to have fun."

Recently, a newlywed couple from England, Jonah and Ann, attended one of Christy's workshops. They had been married just 3 days when they made their tiles. When they return home, they will have the tiles made into nightstands. The tile she made will be his nightstand, and vice-versa.

Another recent workshop was held for a family from Manitoba. Mom Tracy, Dad Allan and their three sons Michael, 9, Erik, 7 and Sascha 3 all cooperated in the tile making process. Christy makes the workshop fun for all ages, for the boys she emphasized how they got to break stuff (the tiles) and play with mud (the grout.) Tracy was happy to find an activity that her entire family could participate in and enjoy. They plan on hanging their tiles on the wall in their home.

As well as the beginner's workshops, Christy has more advanced workshops for hand-painted glass tile and special projects.

Christy also does custom mosaic work for commercial and residential applications. One popular concept is the "ceramic rug" where the tile design is made and then transported to the job for installation. The rest of the floor will be standard tile, and the ceramic rug is used for accent. They range from welcome mat size to that of an area rug.

Pool inlays, fountains and countertops are among the jobs Christy has done. "I love making the religious pieces; I feel a calling to do that. But I am more than willing to work with a customer to make the mosaic piece of their dreams."
