Whales Put on a Show Off Alaska

Barrow, Alaska - Residents of the northernmost villages in the United States and tourists from distant places are getting close to gray whales off Alaska.

The whales come close to the beach at the end of summer as they prepare for the long migration from the Chukchi Sea north of Alaska to the waters of Mexico's Baja California, the Anchorage Daily News reports.

"That was pretty cool - it was really close to the shore," Loila Ahkiviana said after watching a gray whale appear and disappear just off the beach in Barrow, Alaska.

Experts are unsure if the whales come in to shore to rub off barnacles so they will have less drag as they swim south or if they are feeding, the Daily News said.

A whale thrust its head out of the water near Chris and Curtis Carlson, who had come to Barrow from Austria.

"It looked like he was standing on his toes," Curtis said. "I had the feeling he knew there were tourists and he was just showing off."
