Shakira, Daddy Yankee Win MTV Latin America 2006 Awards

Puerto Rican reggaeton artist Daddy Yankee scooped the top prize as "Artist of the Year" at the 2006 MTV Latin American Music awards, held in Mexico City last night.
Mexican Julieta Venegas, Colombian Shakira, British pop singer Robbie Williams and the Mexican bands Manna and Panda also won in other categories.
Julieta Venegas gained the award of "Best Solo Artist" and Robbie Williams was crowned as "Best International Pop Artist".
The prize of "Video of the Year" took Mexican group Manna who was also awarded the Legend Award for its musical trajectory.
Colombian singer Shakira won the "Song of the Year" for her duet with Wyclef Jean, Hips don't lie.
A crowd of some 10,000 packed the Palacio de los Deportes for the awards show hosted by irreverent rap band Molotov and Mexican actress Ana de la Reguera, who starred in the movie "Nacho Libre" and walked on stage doing a striptease.
MTV made a triumphant return to Mexico on Thursday after Hurricane Wilma ruined last year's ceremony just hours before it was to begin on a pristine Caribbean beach. This year's ceremony is the first to take place outside Miami.
"MTV finally understood that Miami is not Latin America," said presenter and actor Diego Luna.
