Becas Vallarta Takes it Easy for a Day Peter Gray - PVNN
Every December, the children who receive scholarships from Becas Vallarta A.C. and the volunteers who devote themselves to maintaining and supervising the scholarship program get together at the Los Mangos Library for an afternoon party.
It is a special opportunity for everyone to get to know each other better, in a relaxed and happy atmosphere. Of course, the volunteers have to do a bit of work even on this day.
Mountains of sandwiches to be made and cookies to be shared out, along with apples and potato chips. Soft drinks to be properly iced. The musical sound system to be set up and two hundred chairs. But it all goes smoothly, thanks to excellent team-work and - for many - years of practice.
Entertainment was provided this year by singer/guitarist Vania Guzman. She had the audience singing along with her and even inspired three girls to perform an impromptu dance routine "on stage."
The only formality during the afternoon is the awarding of certificates of recognition to the many students who have achieved at least a 9.5 average during the school year. There were many perfect 10's among them.
This is a measurable tribute to the students' hard work and the success of the Becas Vallarta program, which does not just provide the financial support these children need - but also counseling and personal support throughout the year.
This year, Becas Vallarta A.C. is about to celebrate its 45th anniversary. Look out for upcoming news of a very special dinner dance in March 2007 to celebrate this achievement. |
