Mexican Alt-Rock Acts Eye U.S. Success

RBD, part of the youth movement that dominated Billboard's Latin charts in 2005, was a leading finalist for the 2006 Billboard Latin Music Awards.
Pop may be Mexico's chief musical export, but the label that brought the teen group RBD to the world is beefing up its U.S. promotion of a new wave of rock and alternative acts.

Emboldened by the success in Mexico of artists Chetes and Zoe, EMI Televisa will work them to college radio and alternative media in the United States this year. Glam-rockers Moderatto and electronica act Moenia will also be part of the new focus, a label source says.

In Mexico, Chetes and Zoe enjoy commercial radio support and chart-making albums. (Zoe's current release has gone gold, selling more than 50,000 units.)

North of the border, early buzz brought Chetes' "Blanco Facil" to the top of iTunes Latino's albums chart before its December 26 U.S. release. Zoe's "Via Lactea" is No. 4 on U.S. trade publication Radio & Records' Latin Rock/Alternative airplay chart.

The label's plan will also encompass showcases; video channels MTV Tr3s, mun2 and LATV; mainstream and Latin alternative press; and social-networking sites. EMI Televisa was established in 2005 as a joint venture between EMI and Spanish-language media giant Grupo Televisa.
