Carlos Santana Helping Plan Mexican Restaurant Chain therockradio.com
| Carlos Santana and his wife Deborah are getting into the restaurant business. | Carlos Santana and his wife Deborah are getting into the restaurant business. They've teamed up with the DSE Corporation to develop a chain of upscale Mexican restaurants under the name Maria Maria, which was the title of a Number One hit song from his 1999 album Supernatural.
The first three will be in the California cities of Walnut Creek, Mill Valley, and Santa Rosa, and they'll replace locations currently operating as The Cantina. The Santanas will be involved in the planning and execution of the concept, but they won't have day-to-day roles at the restaurants.
Carlos told us he's open to new experiences and won't place any limits on himself: "I like letting people know that you shouldn't put a barrier on, or a frame on you. You know, I don't like low ceilings or frames on me."
"For a long time, they're trying to label me, and they haven't yet. You know, first they came up with 'psychedelic mariachi rock,' and I was like, 'Ooh, that's interesting. But that's not who I am - that's what you think I am.'"
The Maria Maria brand will eventually roll out to other cities across the country, and, if all goes well, there are plans for a Santana's restaurant to be opened in the future. |
