The Vernal Equinox - When Day Equals Night PVNN
| For more information, call (322) 222-9511 or send an email to info@tetevallarta.com. | Puerto Vallarta - This week the sun moves from a path below the equator to one above it, and on Tuesday, March 21st, which marks the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, it hovers directly over the equator, equally dividing our hours of daylight and darkness.
Since the onset of agriculture, our ancient forebears marked the spring equinox, known as the Vernal Equinox, as an ideal time to plant seeds. Today, relics of these traditions live on in lore and practice in gardens and fields around the world. Even the first Earth Day, in 1970, was originally celebrated on the spring equinox.
With spring comes the return of light, making the Vernal Equinox a traditional time for celebrations and festivals around the globe. Here in Puerto Vallarta, the day is celebrated through concerts, shows and traditional Aztec ceremonies at sunset.
Cuates y Cuetes on the South Side of Puerto Vallarta is a great place to celebrate the coming of the Spring. One of the best parts about celebrating the Spring Equinox at Cuates y Cuetes is that every year they sponsor a live concert on the beach.
This year, they will be holding the 11th edition of their annual Spring Equinox Festival on the beach next to Los Muertos Pier. The party gets started as some of the most popular bands in Puerto Vallarta and "Pepon," an 8 piece band from Mexico City, get together to perform a Free Jazz Concert.
From 5 to 10 pm you'll be entertained by Cuates y Cuetes owner, Tete, and Javier Baños taking turns as MC as they present the 11th annual Spring Equinox Jazz Concert, featuring:
Martin Montenegro on tenor sax; Paco Barajas, vocal and guitar; Miguel Salazar, congas; “The Celebrators” Steve and Lisa York bass and piano/vocals; Jesus Santana, local guitar player and Carlos Santana’s cousin; Blues band “Deja Blu” with Mo Davenport on guitar & vocals, Patrick Jansen on bass and Bill Street on drums; and the 8 piece band from Mexico City, "Pepon."
There will also be a Puppet Guignol performance with "La Murguita" by Javier Nuñez and Cristina Mercado, followed by the traditional Prehispanic Dance at sunset to thank nature and say goodbye to the old sun and an old era, hoping and awaiting for a brand new and better day... a new fire.
Come and celebrate the coming of the Spring with us tonight from 5-11 pm at Cuates y Cuetes on Los Muertos beach on the north side of Los Muertos Pier. This is one party you won't want to miss! Admission is Free.
