The National Museum of Mexican Art will host two exhibitions this summer focusing on female artists of Mexico.
The National Museum of Mexican Art will open two exhibitions this summer. The exhibitions will be on display through Sept. 2. A complimentary reception is from 6 to 8:30 p.m. tonight.

"Women Artists of Modern Mexico: Frida's Contemporaries/Mujeres artistas en el México de la modernidad: Las contemporáneas de Frida" is an exhibition that showcases the artistic works of 26 women who have produced art since the beginning of the 20th century. These artists used painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture to provide a view of modernity through different perspectives and approaches. These women also expressed themselves though music, dance, literature, theater and cinema. Some of the artists featured in the exhibition include Frida Kahlo, Lola Álvarez Bravo, Rosario Cabrera, Aurora Reyes, Maria Izquierdo, Andrea Gomez, Olga Costa and Mariana Yampolsky.

"Nahui Olin: A Woman Beyond Time / Una mujer fuera del tiempo," explores the work and life of Nahui Olin (1893-1978). Olin quickly became a prominent figure at a time when Mexico was headed towards Modernism. This exhibition will help shed light on how Olin opened the road to freedom for other female artists, which allowed them to walk freely and with great dignity in the cultural scene of 20th century Mexico.

The National Museum of Mexican Art is the largest Latino arts organization in the United States and the only Latino museum accredited by the American Association of Museums. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is free. For information call (312) 738-1503 or visit NationalMuseumOfMexicanArt.
