Rome - Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu said this week that the United States is being ruled by a fascist, George W. Bush, whose administration manipulates the people and the media.

The Mexican moviemaker, who attended the Globalfest Film Festival on Ischia Island, told reporters that 50 percent of US citizens oppose the Bush government and hate what it is doing abroad, while the other 50 percent remains subjugated.

He explained that in the city of Los Angeles, where he has lived over the past few years, that situation is evident, as shown in some gardens, where the owners place US flags reading "Long Live Bush".

Others, however, write slogans against the government, said Gonzalez Iñarritu, adding that the United States is a nation full of contradictions, a phenomenon that strengthens a nationalism that he described as a plague.

Gonzalez Iñarritu was born in Mexico, where he began his successful movie-making career with Amores Perros (Love's a Bitch). He also directed the box-office hits 21 Grams and Babel.

He resides in Hollywood and is a strong critic of the US government's policy and President George W. Bush.
