New York, NY - The Tres Personajes painting which was stolen 20 years ago then found lying in a pile of garbage, was sold for over $1 million at a Sotheby's auction. The 1970 painting by Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo was stolen from a warehouse where the owners had it stored.

The painting was found by Elizabeth Gibson as she took her morning walk four years ago. After Gibson discovered the painting's value, she returned it to its original owner. It was sold to telephone a bidder at Sotheby's New York Auction house for over $1 million.

Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo was the painter of Tres Personajes painting. It was considered an important work from Tamayo's mature period.

According to Elizabeth Gibson, "I know nothing of modern art but didn't seem right for any piece of art to be discarded like that."

Elizabeth Gibson received a reward about $15,000. According to Sotheby's senior vice president of impressionist and modern art, "The husband had paid $55,000 for it as a gift for his wife. But the husband later died."

The theft happened way back 1987, the couple alerted local and federal authorities.
