Mexico City - The production company of actors Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna is shooting a movie about the challenges faced by Central-American immigrants when crossing Mexico on their way to the U.S.

Canana Film’s latest project is entitled “Sin Nombre” (“Without Name”) and recently started shooting in the central state of Morelos, the Mexican daily “El Universal” reported.

It is the debut feature film of Japanese-American filmmaker Cary Fukunaga, who made the short films “Victoria para Chino” and “Kofi.” The lead actors are Paulina Gaytán (“Trade”) and the child Christian Ferrer.

Pablo Cruz, the third founding member of Canana Films, said they are showing the immigration conflict in the Mexican frontier, “where the migra [immigration police] is worse than [in the U.S.]”

The U.S.-based company Focus, which is part of NBC Universal, will co-produce the Spanish-language film, which is expected to be released next year.

However, Cruz stressed that the movie is low budget: “It’s like a 100% Mexican movie, in spite of Focus’ presence.”

Mexico City-based Canana Films is behind three films released this year: “Déficit,” García Bernal’s directorial debut, the documentary “JC Chávez,” by Diego Luna, and “Cochochi,” by Israel Cárdenas and Laura Amelia Guzmán, which won the Discovery Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.

García Bernal and Luna are lifelong friends and starred together in the Academy Award-nominated “Y Tu Mamá También,” to which Focus predecessor company Good Machine International held overseas rights.

García Bernal subsequently starred in Focus’ Academy Award-winning "The Motorcycle Diaries," by Walter Salles.
