Marina in La Cruz Finds Room for Holiday Guests The Log go to original
Nayarit, Mexico - Despite still being under construction, a new marina near Puerto Vallarta found room within its sheltering breakwaters for nearly 100 yachts to anchor and raft alongside finished docks during November and December.
Marina Riviera Nayarit is the last and most southerly of the Singlar marinas in the Escalera Nautica (Mexico's "nautical stairway" string of coastal marinas). The small fishing village of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle lies on the north shore of Banderas Bay, and the new marina lies about 6 nautical miles northwest of the Nuevo Vallarta Inlet, 10 nautical miles northwest of Puerto Vallarta's municipal harbor.
The director of Marina Riviera Nayarit, Christian Mancebo, was able to accommodate the early guests over the holidays, even though the marina isn't scheduled to open officially until February.
Many yatistas reported being happy to find any spot to safely anchor overnight, considering the shortage of slips in the Puerto Vallarta area. Dinghy tie-ups were at a minimum, and the walk to shore crossed construction zones, but there were few complaints. Several restaurants in the town of La Cruz threw parties for the newly arriving yatistas, and local merchants offered discounts.
However, Mancebo said that construction will resume at full speed during January, and the first 200 slips in the first phase should be opened in late February, along with a boardwalk.
Marina Riviera Nayarit plans 396 full-service slips ranging from 31 to 200 feet, plus mega-yacht docks and end ties to 400 feet.
A large landfill and tall buildings being added to La Cruz's waterfront caused some controversy last year.
La Cruz is located in the state of Nayarit, which includes the boating destinations of Punta Mita and San Blas.
