About the Artist: Manuel Valles Gomez is considered to be one of Mexico´s most important contemporary muralists, having been influenced greatly by José Clemente Orozco, Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros and Rufino Tamayo.
His acrylic and oil paintings on canvas portray figures and faces incorporating guitars and various musical instruments. Fish also play an important part in his compositions. He has also created huge murals in many public buildings as well as large outdoor sculptures fashioned from wood, recently installed in Durango.
His "Tierra, Hombre y Produccion," located in Durango´s Instituto Technologico Agropecuario, portrays farmers with the fruits of their labor, reflecting their past cultural heritage and a vision of the future.
Another mural, located at the Procuraduria General de la Republica in Zacatecas, is titled "Dia Internacional de la Lucha Antidrogas" and is a powerful statement of triumph over the forces of evil. Other important murals include Man, Protector of Nature, Man and His Autonomy, Education, Criticism and Participation, and Education and Syndicalism. As you can tell from these titles, Manuel Valles is dedicated to social commentary, especially attempting to convey his values to the public.
Valles Gomez has participated in more than 50 individual and collective expositions in Mexico and the U.S. and has had a permanent showing at Galeria Vallarta for about 11 years. He has collectors all over the world and one of his paintings is in the collection of an ex-president of Mexico. His art works are shown in the Durango Art Museum as well as museums in Monterrey and Zacatecas.
Manuel is also well known for his unique carved wooden masks, featuring applications of leather, stones, shells and hammered metal, each signed by the artist, which will be included in his exposition.
