Two young Winnipeg students will head to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, early this February, taking money and school supplies gathered by their peers with them. The goods will go to The School of Champions, which supports children of families making a living by scavenging the city's garbage dump.
"The money will probably help them build a better school, and more classrooms," said Jeremy Liscum, a Grade 3 student at Strathmillan School.
He learned about the "children of the dump" through his older brother, who is in Grade 6 at Lincoln Middle School.
Devon Liscum was doing a school project when he discovered the Mexican city his family has visited for the last four years is home to a group of people who build their homes, sometimes prepare meals and sell goods using what others throw away.
"It was unbelievable, them just siting in the dump ... it made me feel really sad," Devon said.
Now he and his brother have gotten their schools onboard, raising $251 and enough school supplies to fill two large suitcases so far.
Mom Jennifer Lawson is working on getting the logistics of the trip planned, including a day spent at the dump and a visit to The School of Champions.
"Part of what we like the kids to get out of it when we travel is an education about the culture and context in which other people live," she said.
Both boys will speak to students at their schools about the experience when they return. |
