Yuridia

San Antonio - After the singer Yuridia placed second on "La Academia," Mexico's version of "American Idol," you would think she would feel pressure when she went into the studio to record a CD.

Not so.

"It's not like that," said Yuridia, who just turned 21. "I don't see [the CD release] as something of a burden at any time. I have a lot of people who are with me and always helping me out. I enjoy it a lot; I enjoy this process more than ever."

Yuridia's new CD, "Entre Mariposas," is actually her third, but it's her first after "La Academia" with original material. It includes three songs she wrote and collaborations with several guests, including rock/pop artists Camila, Reik and Sin Bandera. The CD was produced by Javier Calderon.

Yuridia Francisca Gaxiola Flores was born Oct. 4, 1986, in Hermosillo, Mexico, but she was raised in Mesa, Ariz.

She has been on a hot streak since winning in "La Academia." Her first album, "La Voz De Un Angel," was a collection of the tunes she sang on the show. Her second, "Habla El Corazon," featured covers such as "Como Yo Nadie Te Ha Amado," a Spanish version of Bon Jovi's "This Ain't a Love Song," and Roxette's "Listen to Your Heart."

Both CDs sold well in Mexico, but Yuridia says that achievement doesn't translate into automatic success for her first CD of original pop tunes.

"I'm still nervous - the nerves never really go away," she said. "People think what we do is easy, but it is not. It can be very difficult. You're often far away from family for extended time, traveling so much you lose track of where you are."

"But I think that being nervous actually helps you concentrate on what you have to do."

Teaming up with Calderon and key guests also helped.

"It was the record label's idea to work with them," she said. "And Calderon, I had run into him a while back. He's always been helpful and always believed in me."

"The hardest part when you collaborate is trying to solidify an idea. Because everyone has different ideas. But it is also beautiful, the exchange of ideas between such talented people. And then to make real friends of such people is nice."

Possessed of a distinctive, powerful voice, Yuridia can go from the tender whispers on the melancholy "En su Lugar" to the defiant wails of "Colgada a ti."

Yuridia co-wrote the ballad "Ahora Entendi" with Mario Domm from the Mexican rock band Camila. The slow-building tune describes the moment of clarity in a troubled relationship.

"It was so nice to work with Mario," she said. "In truth, I did not know who he was. We met in Mexicali at one of their shows. We started to write and sing, and suddenly we had this song 'Ahora Entendi.'"

Among her main influences, Yuridia counts - no surprise - Cafe Tacuba, Maldita Vecindad, Marc Anthony, Ricardo Arjona, Marisela, Amanda Miguel and Christina Aguilera.

"I remember the first CD I bought was Christina Aguilera, a record she did in Spanish," she said. "I loved the way she sang in Spanish. And I was fascinated by the idea that here was this North American woman, who spoke more English than Spanish, singing in my language. I loved the idea and loved that album."
