Writers & Company Continues Its Special on Contemporary Mexican Writers Words At Large go to original
| Words at Large is CBC’s online destination for Canadians who love books. Look for something new every day, from CBC programs and podcasts, to interviews with writers and more. Visit the website HERE. | | Eleanor Wachtel explores the literary landscape of our other NAFTA partner in the special "Mexico Unmasked." Her conversations with some of that country’s most influential writers counter the stereotypes many continue to hold about the place.
This week’s show, the second of four installments, features her lively discussion with two of the country’s most provocative writers, Juan Villoro and Jorge Volpi.
As a journalist, Villoro has published internationally on such subjects as music, sports, cinema, literature and travel. He has also published dozens of books, been a university professor and translated work from English and German into Spanish.
Volpi was one of the founders of the “Crack” movement in Mexican literature — an ironic response to the Latin American literary “Boom” of the 1960s, with its focus on magic realism. Like Villoro, he has written many prize-winning novels. His most recent one in translation is In Search of Klingsor (Simon & Schuster).
