An English university student is raising money for a trip to Puerto Vallarta where she will help disabled children.

A Newbury woman is spending the summer helping disabled children in Mexico.

Annabel Foster-Fletcher, aged 20, will set off to Puerto Vallarta on June 20 where she will work at a day centre caring for the children.

The university student said she planned the holiday, through Outreach International, because it’s “worthwhile” and felt she could make an impact.

She said: “When a disabled child is born into a family in Mexico, it may be seen as a mark of shame and these children are not generally given the help they need to make the best of their lives.

“Helping the children perform the simplest of tasks and forming a bond with them is what I’m looking forward to the most.”

The centre, which is run by a local pysiotherapist, has 40 children and runs on three shoestring staff.

Miss Foster-Fletcher, who will work daily at the centre for 12 weeks, is expected to learn Spanish.

She is also required to raise £3,000 of sponsorship money, most of which will go towards the children.

A portion of the money will also be used for her living expenses and accommodation, as well as travel money to and from the centre.

She said: “So far I have raised just over £1,000 through a car boot sale and through generous donations from Clarks.

“I am also offering to sell things on Ebay for people who want to have a clear out in return for splitting the profits 50/50. So far I have two wedding dresses and two mobile phones.”
