Mexican Star of Immigrant Drama Gets Border Grief at Cannes Agence France-Presse go to original
| Ruben Sosa | | Cannes, France — The Mexican star of an immigrant drama presented at Cannes got a hard time from disbelieving French airport police after he truthfully told them he was an electrician invited to the glitzy festival, police said Thursday.
"Los Bastardos" star Ruben Sosa, an electrician with no acting experience who was spotted by the film's director and invited to play a lead role, was body-searched and only managed to get out of Nice airport on Monday when he said he had a chauffeur-driven car waiting for him.
Police followed him to the vehicle and let him go when they saw he was telling the truth, local police chief Claude Serra told AFP.
"He had never been out of Mexico before and his brand new passport intrigued customs officials," he said.
"When they asked him what he was doing in Nice the boy said truthfully 'I'm an electrician invited by the Cannes festival'. So the officials had a doubt," said Serra.
In "Los Bastardos," which is in the running in the Un Certain Regard sidebar to the main competition at Cannes, Sosa plays a young Mexican illegal immigrant in a US city who agrees to do a contract killing. |
