When we sent out a plea for a slogan for Becas Vallarta, not surprisingly, longtime members and supporters Buri and Peter Gray came forth with the best one: "Change lives through Education."

Almost at the same time, I met with John Youden, publisher of Vallarta Lifestyles, among many other publications, and long time supporter of Becas to discuss his becoming a Becas Compadre – a donor of $5000 USD or more. It was as if he were clairvoyant and knew of our new slogan because he threw out a challenge that was based on 'changing lives through education.'

He told me of the Punta de Mita Foundation in which he is a co-vice chairman of the executive board and is actively working to help fulfill their mission statement, "The Punta de Mita Foundation is committed to serving our greater community, thereby enhancing the quality of life for the Punta de Mita region." How better to do this than by giving scholarships to girls and boys with great ability and small economic resources in the Punta de Mita area?

So he wanted to talk about starting a scholarship program similar to Becas, but said that to put one together through trial and error would not only be time consuming, but costly. He felt that our expertise of having administered the program almost 50 years would be invaluable to them.

I told him we couldn't even meet the funding needs in Puerto Vallarta, much less try to expand to Punta de Mita (after all I was there to try to extract 'mucho dinero' from him.) He said perhaps they had the ability to raise larger sums in their area that could benefit both of us. We agreed that we should look for a way to collaborate that would give each foundation what it needed. Sounded good to me so we decided to get our people together to brainstorm.

We began a series of meetings among President of Becas Mariel de Fregoso, Finance Committee members Jerry Lafferty and Peter Gray, Treasurer Cuca Preciado, Lic. Laura Joachín and me representing Becas and Vice Co-Chairmen John Youden and Greg Stanton, Accountant Gabriela Rojas Jiménez, Executive Director Erica Lynn Martling, Lic. David Connell (on the telephone) and Cenorina Gomez representing Punta de Mita Foundation.

After much deliberation and many checks by our attorneys to be sure we were following the laws exactly, last week a plan of collaboration was approved by both organizations.

We agreed that Punta de Mita Foundation will identify programs with an educational scope and administer the execution of the programs approved, pay for and account for expenditures.

Becas Vallarta will consult with PMF on these programs and on the possible establishment of a scholarship program for needy individuals, students and/or teachers, in the Punta de Mita region. PMF will reimburse Becas for any funds expended on their account and hopefully raise funds for us as well as themselves.

We are excited to think that a scholarship program will be started for Punta de Mita and look forward to a long collaboration with PMF. We are planning a joint celebration and fund raiser for Becas and Punta de Mita Foundation in the near future. So be ready to get out your check book to help change lives through education in both communities. I'll be in touch!

¡Cambia Vidas - Edúcalos!
Polly G. Vicars - PVNN

Laura Joachim y Polly Vicars representando a Becas.
