Calderón Inaugurates Exhibition Inaugurated Honoring Writer at Palace of Fine Arts PVNN
| Antonieta Rivas Mercado, 1929. Mexican writer, activist and arts patron Antonieta Rivas Mercado was a leading member of an avant garde group of artists and writer | | Mexico City - President Felipe Calderón inaugurated the exhibition at the Palace of Fine Arts honoring Antonieta Rivas Mercado this evening. The exhibition contains a total of 180 artistic works and personal objects belonging to the writer who supported young writers after she had become famous, such as Andrés Henestrosa.
“Antonieta thereby contributed to the development of a much more cultivated, educated Mexico that is prouder of its talent, young people and creators.”
Accompanied by Rafael Tovar y de Teresa, National Coordinator of the Organizing Committee for the Commemoration of the Independence Bicentennial and Revolution Centennial, and Sergio Vela, President of the National Council for Culture and the Arts and Donald Antonio Blair, son of Antonieta Rivas Mercado, the President stated that the writer patronized the Grupo de los Contemporáneos, comprising Xavier Villaurrutia and Salvador Novo, among others.
The president stated that Mexico regards Antonieta Rivas Mercado as a brave, patriotic woman who dared to dream and pursue her dreams as well as striving to achieve her country's well-being.
In this respect, President Felipe Calderón declared: “Today, as we recall Antonieta’s career and struggles, we redouble our commitment to constructing a different, better country, just as she assumed a commitment in her time.
He explained that the exhibition on Antonieta Rivas Mercado is already part of the preparations leading up to the Bicentennial of National Independence and the Centennial of the Mexican Revolution, of which she formed part.
He went on to say that the 2010 celebrations will be a reason for joy, celebration and unity among Mexicans. “It will enable us to take stock and analyze all the things we have built together, what we are today and what we could become if we are united," he declared.
The president stated that ambition, interests and partial interests should never be above the good of the country or Mexico's aspirations, adding: “We will reach 2010 with a more united, supportive Mexico that is proud of its past and roots and prepared to take control of its destiny."
He added that through the exhibition, which will remain open until October 26, Mexicans will be able to enjoy and find out more about the history of our country and its main figures, which contributed a great deal to national culture and history. |
