Mexico City – A third crossing will open on one the world's busiest border points, between San Diego in the United States and Tijuana in Mexico, in 2014, the US ambassador said here Monday.

The new crossing, Otay Mesa East, will "reduce delays at the border," Tony Garza said in a statement, adding that annual regional losses caused by delays were estimated at some 4.2 billion dollars.

The project, for a port of entry and a connected road, would cost some 600 million dollars.

In 2007, 20 million passenger vehicles, 738,000 trucks, 145,000 buses, and 9.1 million pedestrians crossed into the United States at the two existing ports of entry, Garza said.
