Dish to Launch in 5-6 New Cities in Mexico BNamericas go to original
New Mexican satellite TV entrant Dish Mexico is planning to launch in 5-6 additional cities in February and in the longer term is also considering launching a mobile TV service using a WiMax platform, Felipe Chao, Dish Mexico's VP for institutional relations and corporate communications, told BNamericas.
The company created a big splash in November when it launched in Puebla and León with competitive pricing of 139 pesos (US$10) a month for pay TV.
BBVA-Bancomer has said that Dish Mexico will threaten the monopoly Televisa has held on the satellite TV market since 2004 and that prices will be forced down.
In December, the company already had 7,000 customers, Chao said.
Dish Mexico - a joint venture between MVS Multivisión and EchoStar Corporation - has an alliance with incumbent fixed line telco Telmex (NYSE: TMX) for Telmex to provide billing and collection services for the satellite operator.
MOBILE TV
Chao confirmed a report from newspaper El Semanario that Dish Mexico may bring mobile TV to Mexico.
"It is one of the company's plans but for much further down the road," Chao said, adding, "The platform we're thinking of is WiMax."
MVS and US firm Dish Networks have reportedly signed an agreement for Dish Networks to provide the technology to Dish Mexico - allowing satellite signals to be sent to cell phones and laptops. Chao would not confirm which commercial partner Dish Mexico would use.
Mobile TV will reportedly be available in the US during the first quarter. |
