Why I Love Vallarta's Los Mangos Library
email this pageprint this pageemail usGabriela Garcia - PVNN

Growing up in Puerto Vallarta in the sixties and seventies was a great joy for me; the quality of the schools was remarkable, there was a great sense of community and I had parents that shared a love of culture and education.

These blessings were in addition to the great beauty of the jungle, the mountains, and the Bay of Banderas. There was so much to love and so much to explore. I never felt deprived of a television set.

In those years, books were a luxury for only the well-to-do. The majority of us depended on the free books at the schools and the guidance and knowledge of our parents and teachers. I always liked school, which is why I felt the world had been given to me when my parents presented me with a twelve volume encyclopedia, purchased in monthly installments from the Reader’s Digest publications.

From that moment on, my homework was done more neatly and included more information. I spent many afternoons learning who Yuri Gagarin was (the first man to orbit earth,) the great Khans, Catherine The Great, the provinces of Spain, the world's poets, ad infinitum. All this information that I was gathering pushed me to buy or borrow more books - to read poetry, to understand history, to enjoy art.

The main reason I love the library is because it promotes culture, shares information, supports education and promotes the love of reading and the love of books. If these goals are met, they can define the life of a person.

And why do we need to learn, to know? It is well documented that education allows one to adapt more easily to one's environment and also helps one achieve economical and social success. Education is the tool with which one maximizes one's own potential. What is more important than that?

It is because I believe so strongly in the importance of education and because the library enforces it, that I have assumed the responsibility of chairing the first benefit for the Los Mangos Library at Villa Mandarinas. This is a great honor and joy for me.

The cocktail buffet on April 4th promises to be a glamorous and entertaining event. With some generous donations, the community of Puerto Vallarta is helping to make this a successful fund raiser and an evening to remember. There will be music for dancing by Joe "King" Carrasco and the PV All Stars, a silent auction and an abbreviated performance by the Quesadivas at 9:30 pm.

In addition to all of the above, there will be a live auction for one sensational item: a three-night stay for up to fourteen guests at Villa Mandarinas, which has a value of $12,000 USD. It includes ten persons in staff, including chefs and maids. It does not include groceries. Bids will start at $3000 USD. All monies raised on April 4th will benefit "Sally’s Corner" at the Los Mangos Library. For more information, please see Dazzling Fundraiser to Benefit Los Mangos Library's 'Rincon de Sally'.

Please support this important fund raiser for education: Saturday, April 4th from 5:30-9:30 pm at Villa Mandarinas in Mismaloya.

La Biblioteca Los Mangos, una Institucion Vital
Gabriela Garcia - PVNN
