Mexican Experts Detect Apparent Frida Kahlo Fakes Associated Press go to original
| Frida Kahlo | | Mexico City — Mexican experts say that five paintings purportedly done by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo are apparently fakes.
The paintings surfaced recently in a private collection in western Mexico.
But Carlos Phillips says he doesn't think they are genuine. The director of three Mexico City museums devoted to the works of Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera notes wryly that "Frida is producing more after death than when she was alive."
Phillips and expert Josefina Garcia said Tuesday the judgment isn't definitive, but the size, brushwork and other characteristics don't match up. The collector could not be reached.
Other faked Kahlo paintings have surfaced since her death. She was known for tortured self-portraits and tumultuous relationship with Rivera. |
