The Secretary of Tourism calculated that 390 thousand Mexicans traveled less than in 2008 due to the Global Economic Crisis.

The Center for Superior Studies of Tourism (CEST) estimates that during spring break a total of 16.36 million will travel compared to the 16.75 million that traveled last year.

In the middle of the economic crisis "vacations to destinations close to home, rather than long distance or abroad are looking more favorable" said CEST.

It is estimated that 98.5% of Mexican tourist will travel to a destination within Mexico and only 1.5% will travel abroad. It is also expected that 91% will travel by land (43% by car and 48% by bus) and only 9% on airplane. Further investigations say that 59% were staying at the house of a relative or friend, 33% in hotels and 5% in second homes.

Despite the crisis, CEST indicated that local tourists will increase an average expenditure by 5.14% per trip. Last year tourist spent 1,595 pesos ($117 dollars) per trip this year they will spend 1,677 pesos ($123 dollars).

If you add all the expenditures of the Mexicans that traveled on spring break this year, it is estimated that the tourists will leave 27.44 million pesos ($2.018 million dollars) that is 2.69% more than last year.

On the other hand, the "Reforma" newspaper published the results of a telephone survey made to 850 adults from around the country. It revealed that 51% of the surveyed had to reduce by "a lot" their expenses on trips and vacations this year. The ones that reduced "Some" (13%), "little" (9%), "nothing" (18%).

80% of the surveyed said that due to the economic crisis they have had to modify their life style.

El Universal newspaper also published a survey on tourism during spring break, but was limited to the inhabitants of Mexico City, home to over 18 million people.

750 citizens were surveyed face-to-face. The survey revealed that 81% of the citizens will not go on vacation.

Tourism is the second source of income for this country.
