The exact origins of La Santa Muerte are uncertain, but her history is rooted in beliefs of pre-Hispanic and Afro-Caribbean cultures, and Mexico's strong tradition of Catholicism. She has been around at least since the mid-1960s, and her origins are not linked to drug traffickers.
