WestJet passengers were whisked away out of Mexico on weekend rescue flights after the airline cancelled service to the country until June 20 amid the outbreak of Influenza A H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu.
Brian and Joanne Redeker's stay in Puerto Vallarta was supposed to last for another week when they were to be joined by their children, whose flights have now been cancelled.
"It's disappointing," Brian said. "The weather is beautiful there."
Another disappointed traveller, Mark Davis, wasn't planning on returning home for another week. "It's brutal - I think it's a bit of an over-reaction," he said.
WestJet spokesman Robert Palmer said the vast majority of their guests arrived home safely over the weekend. "We have managed now to reach over 99% of all of the guests for WestJet and WestJet Vacations who were in Mexico," he said.
For stranded customers, WestJet will pay for a hotel stay of up to three nights and up to $300 US to fly home on another carrier, said Palmer. Guests who were forced to interrupt their vacation will be compensated, he said
"You'll get a pro-rated amount back if it was cut short," said Palmer. "It's best that they give us a call."
