The World Tourism Organization (WTO) Executive Board said that Mexico's swift response should be regarded as a lesson in the importance of adopting suitable measures that limit the impact of health contingences on international tourism.
Mexico City - The World Tourism Organization (WTO) hailed the Mexican Government’s efforts to “seriously and responsibly deal with the AH1N1 influenza outbreak.
During the 85th period of sessions of its Executive Board, held last Friday in Bamako, Mali, the international organization expressed its support and solidarity with families that have lost loved ones as a result of this epidemic and with the countries affected, adding that Mexico's prompt response should be regarded as an example.
They also decided to consider this reaction as a lesson in the importance of early collaboration with the countries affected by this new virus to recognize that there is a contingency and to adopt appropriate measures that will limit its impact on international tourism.
The WTO Executive Board said that these actions confirm the principles and objectives of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism in order to prevent future unnecessary declarations affecting countries undergoing similar crisis situations.
As part of the session, it highlighted the important role the WTO, in conjunction with its member states, in the transmission of accurate information on the United Nations System's response to the AH1N1 VIRUS and similar situations to prevent unilateral measures that affect international tourism.
