The Seven Deadly Sins in Puerto Vallarta
email this pageprint this pageemail usSue Berndt - PVNN

The Seven Deadly Sins will be performed every Monday and Tuesday at 7 pm at the Rio Cuale Cultural Center and every Friday and Saturday at the Cecatur Theater through the end of August.
Although my wife and I have been to Vallarta many times over the years, we are newcomers to the Vallarta cultural scene; as a matter of fact, we are new expatriates to Vallarta. After reading an article in one of the local publications here, we decided to see a play at the Vallarta cultural center on the Rio Cuale. In all the times we’ve been here as tourists, we never knew this place existed!

Please understand we speak no Spanish and were worried we would not understand what we saw. As it turned out, all this angst was unnecessary. The play is performed in the air conditioned Cultural Center Theater near the John Huston statue. The group of 5 actors acts out the play with only a scaffold, a drum, and a long red scarf as the main props. The few words that are spoken in Spanish are spoken with much intensity and, although we couldn’t understand what was said, the message of the play was clear just from the performance. The actors keep your mind ticking during the whole play.

The theater group from Guadalajara wore intriguing costumes and masks (all of which they made themselves) and manipulated themselves around the scaffolding in a way that adds much to the play. We both enjoyed the play very much. Sadly, there were few people in the audience to applaud and support such a fine effort and performance from these young, committed, hard working artists.

The play will be performed every Monday and Tuesday at 7 pm at the Rio Cuale Cultural Center, and every Friday and Saturday at the Cecatur Theater at the corner of Matamoros and Zaragoza through the end of August. Tickets are a bargain at only $60 pesos per person. We hope you get a chance to see it.

The Cultural Center has what looks to be an ambitious schedule of performances. Since they don’t seem to promote the center, it would be nice if you did so! Where can you see live theater for less than $6 USD a ticket?
