Mexico Tourism Minister Sets Record Jimm Budd - TravelVideo go to original August 05, 2009
| Secretaría de Turismo (SECTUR) Rodolfo Elizondo Torres | | Appointed to his job during the administration of President Vicente Fox (2000 - 2006) and re-appointed by President Felipe Calderon, Rodolfo Elizondo now has served longer is his post than any previous Tourism Minister. A presidential term is limited to six years and for the past 20 years no tourism minister has served even six years.
Reviewing his accomplishments, Elizondo declared that much still must be done, from expanding Mexico’s markets - the United States and Canada account for about 80% of all visitors to Mexico - to marketing the country as more than a beach destination. Rumors continue to circulate that Elizondo may soon be replaced, but similar rumors are heard regarding all cabinet officials.
With one notable exception, Tourism Ministers have been an odd lot ranging from Rosa Luz Alegria, supposedly the mistress of President José Lopez Portillo; Oscar Espinosa, who later had to flee the country to avoid arrest for corruption, and Jesús Silva Herzog, a former finance minister appointed to the job to prevent his running for president. Indeed Elizondo, a was given his post after losing his job as presidential spokesperson.
As someone remarked at the time, “Don’t be distressed. People are more concerned about where they will spend their next vacation than about what the president had to say today.” |
