| Announces that Mexico 200 Years Exhibition will be held at National Palace in 2010. | | Mexico City - President Felipe Calderón inaugurated the Domeniko Theotokopoulos 1900, El Greco Exhibition at the Palace of Fine Arts and announced that in order to continue promoting culture, a major exhibition entitled Mexico 200 Years will be opened at the National Palace in 2010.
He explained that this will be an extraordinary museum exhibition that will enable Mexicans and visitor to find out about and feel proud of their history and the life and deeds of their heroes.
“That is why we are gathering together a large collection of over 500 works that will show us the time when National Independence and the Mexican Revolution took place," said President Calderón.
Accompanied by his wife, Margarita Zavala, he reported that next year, most of the halls in the National Palace, the political heart of Mexico, will be opened to the public for the first time so that they discover one of the most important, historical buildings in the country,
In view of this, President Calderón declared: “2010, which will be the year of the nation, will be a great opportunity to find out about Mexico, its history and culture, which is a great national asset."
Accompanied by President of the National Council of Culture and the Arts, Consuelo Saízar, the President declared the promotion of and access to culture are crucial to providing Mexicans with opportunities to develop and live better.
That is why, he said, “We have increased the budget from six billion pesos in 2006 to a record budget of over 11.5 billion pesos in 2009 for culture, in other words, it has been virtually tripled in three years.
He added that his government has continued investing in the modernization of cultural infrastructure and supporting artistic creation, as a result of which the number of incentives and creators has increased by 52%.
In this respect, he said that the El Greco 1900 Exhibition confirms Mexico as a meeting point for universal art that brings together great artists from all times.
He said that government's effort to enable Mexicans to enjoy major exhibitions has included those on Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, Tamara de Lempicka, Isis and the Plumed Serpent, Spain, Crossroad of Civilizations and Czars. Art and Culture of the Russian Empire and Teotihuacán, City of the Gods, among many others that have been displayed in the country's national museums. |
