| Barbara and Al Garvey will begin teaching tango classes on Monday, January 11th at J&B Dancing Club. For more information call (322) 222-8895 or email alybarbara(at)yahoo.com. | | Painter, once a designer of artistic doors and a Tango instructor, Al Garvey, will show his recent paintings on Wednesday, January 6, from 6-10 pm at Galeria Uno, 561 Morelos. Garvey, who painted as a child, has been painting landscapes here. He designed Barbara's and his home in Vallarta with two dance floors and rock-sculpted walls. One of his mentors was famous Russian emigre master artist Nicolai Fechin. A showing not be missed!
Tango classes, taught by Al and Barbara Garvey, begin Monday, January 11. For further information, email them at alybarbara(at)yahoo.com.
The International Friendship Club will hold another bazaar on Wednesday, January 20, from 11 am - 4 pm. Local talent to items from Bali will be featured.
Former Vallarta theater director, Tencha Avila, has "Kiss Bessemer Goodbye" opening in March in New York City. The run for several months is at 138 East 27th at Repertorio Espano Theater in New York. For further information, email tencha(at)tenchaavila.com.
Rhonda of Don and Rhonda soon will have out a CD of 10 songs produced by record executive Blaine Selkirk. Don and Rhonda hope to do a concert/concerts at the Los Arcos Amphitheater with the government's cultural department. They wowed a private Christmas party with about 70 persons in attendance with a sitar concert. Yes, even the increasingly pregnant belly dancer performed! The evening included everything from a beautiful sunset to fire in their performances.
Other wonderful parties were shared by Wally and Chuck, Cherie and Pam and Beverly and Willow.
Christmas Eve was filled by a concert of beautiful Mexican music at Parque Hidalgo by the Mexican First Baptist Church. Then Sol Rose at Cafe Bohemio provided diners with a festive Christmas dinner. Christmas Eve is an all-nighter in our neighborhood with a marching band, firecrackers and fiestas.
Christmas Day on the Malecón was filled, primarily with Mexicans, with their children, including many holiday visitors. Some children were trying out their bicycles along with other toys. Such a joyful time!
Marcia Escontria, former owner of Ambiance by Marcia, who now helps out at Cafe Bohemio, had sugar falling on her head as we dined at Coco's Kitchen, 122 Pulpito ...as birds, flying overhead, sometimes snatch the sugar, especially brown sugar, from the sugar bowls.
The very mean Zeta cartel continues to have participants in this area. A homicide occurred last week. The Spanish language newspapers covered this extensively.
Nacho Daddy is a venue for different music groups. Some excellent musicians play there Thursday - Saturday, along with special musical events there. Stopping by to take in the music is Walter Johnson, a jeweler of amber and silver jewelry with an airport kiosk. Walter's father played with Count Basie and Fats Waller.
A fellow journalist friend at a gathering told me I was causing a controversy by writing that Tiger Woods has a home here. What? Controversy? Just a home, in his case? Apparently a man in this gathering disputed the information. I told him that the athlete's home is managed. Along with other famous persons' homes. Famous athletes do indeed live here (I don't follow sports generally, and while told the names, I frankly cannot remember them). The rich and famous have methods and means to remain unknown, unless someone talks, for heaven's sake. Woods has played golf here publicly and undoubtedly privately. Maybe the real controversy will be if some women here come forward to talk!
I was asked by someone recently how I have so much information in a column. Well, I have been doing this journalism business since I was a teenager, with a column then. Thank you to those of you who tell me I provide a sense of community with Out and About.
